ENGLISH · LESSON 2.2

Tense & Voice

Tense isn't 12 formulas to memorize — it's a position in a 2D space: time on one axis, viewpoint on the other. Voice is a separate switch entirely: which side of the action gets the spotlight.

Foundational · used across Daily, Workplace & Academic English alike

I. Tense as a Coordinate System

Put time on the X-axis (past / present / future) and viewpoint on the Y-axis (simple / progressive / perfect). Every tense is just one coordinate on this grid.

TIME → VIEWPOINT → Past Present Future Simple Progressive Perfect hardest for most learners

Present + Perfect (highlighted) is the one coordinate most learners struggle with — it links a past action to a present result, a concept many languages don't grammaticalize the same way.

Viewpoint \ TimePastPresentFuture
Simplea point, or a standing rule
Simple Past●
V-ed
I built an app. — a completed fact.
Simple Present●
V / V-s
I build apps. — a habit or standing rule.
Simple Future●
will + V
I will build an app. — a prediction.
Progressivea frame mid-motion
Past Progressive●
was/were + V-ing
I was coding when you called. — a moment caught in motion.
Present Progressive●
am/is/are + V-ing
I am coding now. — happening as we speak.
Future Progressive●●
will be + V-ing
I will be coding tomorrow. — mid-action at a future point.
Perfecta bridge across time
Past Perfect●●
had + V-pp
I had launched it before 2025. — done before another past point.
Present Perfect●●●
have/has + V-pp
I have built three sites. — a past action, felt in the present.
Future Perfect●●
will have + V-pp
I will have finished by June. — will already be done by then.

II. Voice — Which Side Gets the Spotlight

Active and passive voice describe the exact same event. The only thing that changes is which side of the action — the doer or the receiver — is in focus.

Active — spotlight on the source

●

The server processed the request.

The energy source (the server) leads the sentence and acts outward onto the request.

Passive — spotlight on the receiver

●●
be + V-pp

The request was processed by the server.

The receiver (the request) leads instead, and the source is pushed to the background — or dropped entirely: The request was processed.

Practice

Plot this sentence on the grid: "By next year, she will have shipped four products." Which coordinate is it, and why?

Show answer

Future + Perfect. "By next year" sets a future reference point, and "will have shipped" describes an action that will already be complete by that point — the defining move of the Perfect row: a bridge connecting two moments in time, not just a single point.
